Family Friendly Libraries is pleased to announce that your library has been selected to receive one of our Gold Star Awards for the month of April, 2007. This award is reserved for individuals and libraries which demonstrate exemplary dedication to protecting children and maintaining local control of library policies.
Your library was nominated for the Gold Star Award because of the actions being taken by the director, staff, and library board trustees to ensure that taxpayers can use the library without being subjected to displays of pornographic images on computer terminals.
It was brought to our attention that your library temporarily suspended Internet service in November, 2006, when it was discovered that obscene material was being displayed on computer screens, and that the Internet service remains suspended while you work to craft a new policy.
We realize that libraries providing Internet access in the state of Michigan face a unique challenge due to the requirement to have one unfiltered computer. Your effort to devise a policy that is both consistent with the law and sensitive to the needs of all library users is commendable.
Citizens depend on the professional judgment dedication of people like you to ensure that libraries are pleasant places where families can enjoy reading and learning in a non-threatening atmosphere.
Please accept this award and our deepest gratitude and appreciation.
Yours sincerely,
Denise Varenhorst
